An Afternoon with The Wailers

The Wailers brought an Irie vibe to Houston this past weekend. iFest sang and swayed along with the smooth, positive vibrations of some of Bob Marley’s most famous songs: “One Love,” “Three Little Birds,” “I Shot the Sherriff,” and “No Woman, No Cry.” On stage with The Wailers was Lifetime Achievement award winner, Aston “Family Man” Barrett. As the lone remaining member of The Wailers that recorded with Bob Marley, he leads the band through songs he co-produced and arranged with Bob. The band members are extremely talented with long bios of significant achievements and some have been playing with The Wailers for over 10 years. The Wailers are actively on tour and after a quick jaunt along the Gulf Coast, they will be jetting to Brazil for a 7 city tour of iFest’s featured country for 2013. Take a look through a few shots I grabbed during the show and be on the look out for when The Wailers are coming to your city next. See all the pictures, here.

Experience Brazil with iFest!

photo (25)This is the last weekend for iFest, folks. Don’t miss out on this amazing cultural experience. From art to music to food and more, the folks behind iFest have been hard at work all year round to make sure you feel the spirit of Brazil. I attended both days last weekend (and even stole the mayorship away from Jay M.) and had an absolute blast. (I was lucky even enough to catch Bootsy Collins in action and meet every member of the Wailers…I know, crazy. I feel blessed.)

So, don’t miss your chance this weekend to be a part of the only Houston festival that brings artists, musicians, food and culture to your doorstep from countries all around the world. Need another reason? Ok, this weekend’s headliners include Los Lobos and Aaron Neville.  Buy your ticket early, skip the line and enjoy this beautiful Houston weather!

As an iFest veteran (I’ve been every year since 2006), I’d like to pass on some tips that have helped me in the past. Enjoy!

  • Take a look at the map to get oriented before you head out
  • Park at Dallas & Clay; it’s $5 and two blocks from the entrance
  • Eat a big breakfast and bring cash for fun festival treats you only get to experience once in awhile. Coupons are used to purchase food & drinks; bring $40-60 cash to purchase the coupons, they go quick!
  • Bring your kids! Kids (under 12) are free on Sundays! There are lots of interactive activities for children and families in the kids world.
  • Take a look at the music lineup and pick your favorites, then show up early to get a front row seat. Where else can you pay $15 to see music legends inches from you?!
  • Catch the Carnaval parade! It happens twice a day. Don’t. Miss. This.
  • Bring Sunscreen. Don’t be silly. It may be cold today, but we still live in Texas, y’all.

That’s it! Come out and have some fun!

A Moment with Sergio Mendes

IMG_5140This past Friday night, Grammy award winner Sergio Mendes and the Brasil 66 came to Houston to help kick off iFest. We had a chance to catch up with him just before the show and asked him a few questions about Brazil, his music and what’s next.

IMG_5240Lauren Ignited: As your home country, what would you most want to share with the world about Brazil?
Sergio Mendes: Brazil is a mixed culture of Portuguese  African, French, Dutch… Cultural Diversity give Brazilian culture something different. The Diversity gives us the ability to enjoy life.

LI: At what moment did you know you wanted to pursue music?
SM: Very young! When I was 15, playing music in clubs.

LI: Mas Que Nada has obviously become recognized as one of your most famous songs and has been recorded multiple times. How does it feel to have written a song that has taken so many different directions?
SM: I think it’s amazing that that melody is so universal. Different ages, different countries, all enjoy it. It’s a magical thing for me; it has become the sound track for my life. That melody is so universal. We travel all over the world and we play that song and people join in and sing. It’s just a wonderful experience.

image_5LI: You have won a Grammy, multiple Latin Grammy’s and have toured the world for 5 decades. What do you have planned next?
SM: I’m enjoying my life daily. No major long term plans. Whatever comes up that I like and feel is the right thing to do, that’s what I’ll do.

I am humbled and honored to have spoken with Mr. Mendes. He was very friendly and kind. He and the Brasil 66 put on amazing show, just as they have for decades. Continue the celebration of Brazil this weekend and next in Downtown Houston at iFest!
